Bald Eagle Walks

Did you know that upwards of 100 Bald Eagles winter at Barr Lake? Join us to see this spectacle and observe these resilient birds. We’re hosting three opportunities to get out and learn about the eagles of Barr Lake this winter. Each walk will be guided by knowledgeable Bird Conservancy Staff and Volunteers so you’re sure to learn something new! Binoculars will be provided. Spanish interpretation will be offered on January 18th.

Accessibility Information: This program includes traveling ~3 miles round-trip (1.5 miles to gazebo/viewing area and back) on a packed dirt trail, with little to no incline. Accessible parking and restrooms are available at the meeting location. Some adaptive equipment is available for this event. Bird Conservancy is committed to making our events accessible to everyone, If you require an accommodation or service to fully participate, please contact Sarah Doxon (303-659-4348 x 53 or sarah.doxon@birdconservancy.org) for more information.

Barr Lake Christmas Bird Count

Once a year each winter, dozens of volunteers congregate at Barr Lake State Park, Colorado to dedicate their day to a singular purpose: tally every bird of every species seen within a 15-mile diameter circle centered on Barr Lake. This tradition has been taking place every year since 1980 at Barr Lake. The 2023 Christmas Bird Count will take place on December 31.

We have driving routes available if you want to stay in a warm vehicle that makes frequent stops to count birds. We also have walking routes that can cover up to six miles. You can be a recorder and write down the number of birds being identified, you can be the counter or you can be the identifier! These counts really are for everyone!

The Banding Station is open from August 22 – October 23, 2024 and one hour programs are available Tuesdays – Fridays from 7:30-8:30 a.m., and Saturday-Sunday from 8-9 a.m., 9-10 a.m., and 10-11 a.m. (closed Mondays). Registration is required for all timeslots.

Turn left after the bridge, then a quick right onto the Niedrach Trail (with sign). Take a left at the first fork of the Niedrach Trail and continue until reaching the banding station. Total walking distance is about ¼ mile from parking.
