Bird Walks at Barr Lake

Join Bird Conservancy of the Rockies in this opportunity to get out and go birding around Barr Lake, seeing what different birds stop over throughout the year. This program is intended for ages 10 & up but all skill levels are welcome to attend. Binoculars and field guides will be available to borrow for the duration of the program.

Panhandle Trail Feathers Bird Outing

Did you know that western Nebraska is a birding convergence of eastern and western species? Join Bird Conservancy of the Rockies to get to know the winged wonders that share our home. We will explore a different areas of the Panhandle from April to November, covering many habitats with a chance to discover new birds each time. This program is intended for anyone interested in birding; from beginners to experts.
Binoculars and field guides will be available to borrow. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to be outside for two hours.

Great Backyard Bird Count

Take part in the continued community science of the Great Backyard Bird Count. This world-wide event is a collaborative effort of birders all coming together to see what birds are around mid-winter in their community.
Join us at Barr Lake to take part in this tradition and learn how you can continue being a community scientist throughout the year!

Barr Lake Christmas Bird Count

Family Christmas Bird Count

There’s no better way to spend a chilly day than to get outside and explore the wonders of nature as a family! Join Bird Conservancy of the Rockies educators as we discover the unique bird species that call Chadron State Park their winter home. Enjoy family-friendly birding around the Lagoon Shelter and pond, and see how the Pine Ridge changes with the seasons.
Bird Conservancy staff will be leading two guided birding programs from 9:45-10:30am, and 10:45-11:30am.
Binoculars, field guides, and free hot drinks will be provided. No birding experience necessary!

A Nebraska State Parks permit is required to enter the park. Permits can be purchased at outdoornebraska.gov/permits/ The Chadron State Park office is closed on the weekends.
